Collection accounts are the most damaging items on a Canadian credit file. Here's the step-by-step process for disputing and removing them from TransUnion Canada.
Not all collection accounts are accurate or legally reportable. Common grounds for dispute:
• The collection is past the 6 year reporting limit from date of last activity
• The balance, date, or creditor name is wrong
• The debt is not yours (wrong person, fraud, or identity mix-up)
• The collection appears twice (from original creditor and collection agency)
• The account was settled but still showing as outstanding
All of these are disputable under PIPEDA.
In most Canadian provinces, negative items must be removed 6 years from the date of last activity — even if the debt was never paid.
To check: find the 'date of last activity' on your TransUnion Canada report. Add 6 years. If that date has passed — the collection must be removed.
This is your strongest and fastest dispute. CreditKO identifies items past their reporting limit automatically.
Send a PIPEDA dispute letter via Canada Post Registered Mail to:
TransUnion Canada — Consumer Relations Centre
P.O. Box 338, LCD1
Hamilton, ON L8L 7W2
Your letter must include: your full name, address, date of birth, the specific account being disputed, the grounds for dispute, and your evidence. Cite PIPEDA — not FCRA.
TransUnion must respond within 30 days under Canadian law.
If 30 days pass with no response, file a complaint with the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada at fcac-acfc.gc.ca. Reference your Canada Post Registered Mail tracking number as proof of delivery.
FCAC complaints create a formal regulatory record. Most collection disputes resolve at this stage.
